About this project

Late 2011 the Syndicat des Transports d’Île-de-France launched Vianavigo, a travelers information system. We took part in the mobile side of that project by designing an application that lets iPhone and Android users quickly find their path around the Parisian public transportation network. An updated application was released by fall 2012, providing essential information and new features:

• “Around me” map to check stops location around your position or an adress
• The Parisian public transportation map
• Bus schedules

We thought this application for the end-users. After a field study, we identified the major expectancies they had, and this drove the global design of the application :

• I would like to quickly get an itinerary starting where I currently am: We made that feature available in a single tap from the home screen. The “Around me” map let you find stops near your location, find an itinerary from this position or check the schedule.
• I wish I could still view my itineraries even though I lost my network connection: Itineraries are locally stored on your phone. They are available at all time in the second page of the home screen.
• Typing in my departure and arrival can be tedious: We made the process as easy as it can get. For any trip previously entered, depature and arrival are saved and can be replayed in a single tap straight from the search field.
• It would be great to be able to avoid a stop: In the background we’re using an extremely advanced itinerary engine which lets us take into account every user’s request.

Finally, the application accuratly positions bus and subway stops on a map. Some of them sometimes being hard to spot, this is a very valuable tool for the users.
